The Jaguar XJS was introduced in September 1975 replacing the E-Type and went on to become one of the most popular Jaguars ever made. Initially, it was only available as a Coupe with the Convertible becoming available in the mid 80s. It featured a Jaguar V12 petrol engine, the same one introduced in the E-Type and XJ12 saloon a few years earlier. The transmission featured a choice of manual or automatic gearboxes.

The XJS featured large tail lights, a thick dark bumper and buttresses behind the rear windows culminating in the rear end of the car looking unlike any other Jaguar. The suspension featured the Jaguar Independent Rear Suspension which was not only comfortable but offered superb handling and excellent ride qualities as well.

Low demand for the thirsty 5.3 litre V12 in the wake of a fuel crisis saw the introduction in 1981 of a High-Efficiency engine reducing fuel consumption by as much as 20 per cent. This boosted sales and the XJS literally got a new lease of life becoming the XJS-HE - HE for High Efficiency. It now featured a redesigned interior with a new veneered dashboard and simpilfied instrumentation. The XJS overall appearance looked fresh and updated with redesigned bumpers, mirrors, and new five-spoke alloy wheels.

A new 3.6 litre Jaguar AJ6 straight six  (I6) engine was introduced in 1983 and in the same year the XJS Cabriolet was introduced. A full convertible version became available as from 1986. A facelift XJS model was launched in 1992 featuring a 4.0 litre AJ6 engine with revised quarter windows,  new rear windows and all new tail lights. The interior also saw minor revisions with a new steering wheel and centre console.

The XJS went on to become the longest running Jaguar model remaining in production for 21 years with over 115,000 units sold. The XJS was discontinued in1996 to be replaced by the Jaguar XK8.
