The Land Rover Discovery Sport was introduced in 2014 as the replacement for the Freelander 2, slotting into the Range Rover family as a compact premium SUV with genuine seven-seat capability. Built on the Premium Lightweight Architecture (PLA) platform shared with the Range Rover Evoque, the L550 combines Land Rover's trademark off-road ability with the refinement and practicality that modern families demand.

Engine choices have evolved since launch. Early models offered the 2.2-litre SD4 diesel carried over from the Freelander 2, but this was quickly replaced by Land Rover's own Ingenium family of four-cylinder engines — a 2.0-litre turbodiesel in various power outputs (150 PS, 180 PS and 240 PS) and a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol producing 200 PS or 250 PS. All models come with a 9-speed ZF automatic gearbox and intelligent all-wheel drive with Land Rover's Terrain Response system, giving the Discovery Sport far more off-road credibility than most of its rivals.

The 5+2 seating layout is a key selling point. The third-row seats fold completely flat into the boot floor, and the second row slides fore and aft to balance legroom with boot space. With all seven seats in use the boot is tight, but with five seats the Discovery Sport offers a generous 981 litres of load space — practical enough for a family estate car.

Land Rover's Terrain Response system allows the driver to select from a range of driving modes — General, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud & Ruts, and Sand — each adjusting throttle response, gearbox behaviour and traction control to suit the conditions. Hill Descent Control (HDC) and Wade Sensing (on higher-spec models) add further off-road confidence.

A significant facelift arrived in 2019, bringing a refreshed exterior with slimmer LED headlights, a redesigned dashboard with the new Pivi Pro infotainment system, and mild-hybrid (MHEV) technology across the Ingenium engine range. The 48-volt mild-hybrid system recovers energy during braking and provides a small torque boost during acceleration, improving fuel economy and reducing CO2 emissions.
