Common reason for failure of a turbocharger.
 
This particular turbo is one of the most common we get asked to supply.
 
The common reason for failure is a carbon build up around the variable vanes assembly which restricts the movement of the actuator arm which then generates a fault code in the electronic actuator.
 
The common electronic actuator fault code (error code) we are given by customers is turbo fault code P132B. This relates to a REA fault (Rotary Electronic Actuator) which is the little black box on the side of the turbocharger.
 
This carbon build up around the variable vanes is commonly referred to as suffering with 'sticky vanes' and is caused by sooty deposits left behind in the exhaust side of the turbo from excessively sooty exhaust gases (the vehicle is probably running too rich). This restriction can cause the turbo to drop into 'limp mode' due to boost issues. The first thing a driver can experience is the glow plug light coming on.
 
Even with a new turbocharger fitted the cause of the turbo failure may still exist. 
 
Things to check that might be causing the carbon build up in the turbocharger include; blocked or faulty EGR valve, faulty MAF sensor, leaking injectors etc. Best get these checked when fitting the turbo as these cause cause the turbo to fail again.
